'Legends' promote new safety message

Card collecting and truck driving might seem unusual bedfellows.
But a new road safety campaign initiated in the Waikato is hoping to appeal to the collector hidden inside even the most stoic truckie. The Waikato Truck Legends road safety campaign launched in Huntly yesterday features a special edition collector's 10-card series.

Each card depicts a Waikato truck together with a road safety message aimed at truckies. Prizes are on offer for those who collect all 10 cards.
The initiative is being driven by the Waikato regional road safety education group, a cross-agency collective led by the Waikato Regional Council.
Campaign co-ordinator Monique Haines said the campaign reflected truckies' passion for their work "and especially for their vehicles".
"We're fortunate here in the Waikato to have a fantastic group of people working in the industry and many of the best trucks in the business come from our region."
"The trucks photographed for the card series are considered to be Waikato's most awesome by the people in the heavy vehicle industry, who helped to choose them," she said.
Darrin Murcott, one of the featured truck drivers, said it was great the campaign highlighted key safety principles as well as "appreciating the passion that we all share for the vehicles, the job and life on the road".
The first card features a Kenworth Aerodyne K108 from Trans Taupo Ltd. A further nine cards will be released over the next six months.
Each card in the Waikato Truck Legends series can be ordered online at reducetherisk.co.nz
